After graduating from university, I worked for the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for several years. Later, I studied theater in the United States, and upon returning to Japan, I have immersed myself in the world of English education and rakugo (traditional Japanese comic storytelling). I studied English under Masao Kunihiro, a simultaneous interpreter.

I was enrolled in the general course of the Tachikawa school of rakugo for several years after its founding in 1983. This led me to open a rakugo class for the general public in 1991, and then an English rakugo class in 2007. My stage name is Kanariya, reflecting my desire to embody the pioneering spirit of the Rokumeikan, a famous Western-style building during the Meiji era.

Currently, I perform English rakugo and conduct seminars both domestically and internationally. I began performing overseas in 2015, and have visited the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, Finland, Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Laos.

To date, I have translated over 100 rakugo stories into English and performed over 80 rakugo stories in English. Those scripts are included in the trilogy "Eiraku's 100 English Rakugo Scripts Vol. 1, 2, 3".
